Smartphones are the hottest tech segment around at the moment thanks to the likes of iPhones, Android G1s and any number of new sexy devices on the way from the likes of LG, Samsung and even Toshiba with its super-slnTG01. But is Microsoft actually planning to enter this market?
According to a researchers at Broadpoint AmTech and the 'multiple industry sources' they believe, Microsoft will be launching its own smartphone before the end of the year.
There have been rumours about a Microsoft smartphone before with some suggesting that the device would use nVidia's Tegra chipset for advanced 3D and HD support. That said, Microsoft has flatly denied - again - that it is planning to do a phone.
After all, it's plans to ape Apple's iPod success with the Zune wasn't exactly a roaring success and it ended up screwing a lot of hardware partners that were using its software on their own music players. In a statement yesterday, a company spokesperson said:
"Microsoft is not doing a phone. Our core focus has been and will continue to be providing software plus services and working with our partners to deliver great phones. Our partners have been integral in our success to date, and we are excited about the innovation we are bringing to the market together."
Let's hope not anyway because if it does, the only ones it will hurt are all those phone makers already using the Windows Mobile software. As for users, they'd be happy if Microsoft just made a better, less clunky version of Windows Mobile. (Source-gizmodo.com)
